What I'd like to ask is her impression at the end of the series.

When it's all said and done, is Relena still open to her feelings? Will she still act on them? From what I've seen of Endless Waltz, it doesn't apper as if she still has feelings for Hero or not.

To me it seems that she's become... cold... like a doll to be used to manipulate the people. She's given up on her own humanity to service the needs of all humanity.

That's what I remember. It's been ages since I've concerned myself with Gundam.

Naiive I think my answer will be...

I stopped watching CN a long time ago, roughly when the origional MSG was being aired, because a lot of the now 'mainstream' anime was being shown.

From what I can determine, a lot of the 'mainstream' anime isn't as deep. It's simple, like DBZ- and many people are drawn to it for the senseless violence and stretched-out battle sequences ala pro wrestling fights. It just didn't do anything for me.

So I say naiive, because children who stick to mainstream anime become like this- children who fanaticly defend their shows without any basis of comparison to any really great anime out there. I mean, after watching some X-play (video game reviewer show) and seeing some of these 'mainstream anime fans' defend a horrible game simply because they're fans makes me laugh and shiver at the same time. I laugh because now the X-play hosts hate fanmail (and fanmail from anime fans), and shiver because these fans will defend a bad game simply because it's from their show.

It gets worse when they refuse to watch the series in subtitles in the way it was origionally supposed to be. Anime is not ours, folks, it's imported from japan. In the process it's likely (especially on CN) to be cut up and dumbed down for audiences of lesser intelligence. This, in turn, is force-fed to the CN masses, who accept it as 'true anime.'

Reminds me of the Wingers V. UCers at Gundam.com. Most of the 'mainstream fans' defended Wing and accepted it as the ONLY Gundam, even though the origional MSG was produced first. Laughed at that too because the Wingers complained that the 'next gundam series' didn't have their precious prettyboy gundam pilots in it, and the animation apparently sucked :(

Evangelion is a thinking man's anime.

It is not about giant robots
It is not about saving the world
It is not about fanservice ;)

Rather, Evangelion is what one makes of it. Even Anno says there is no definative answer to Evangelion; it just is. And how it just is works really nicely.

Shinji is Shinji, and the last episodes deal with Ikari comming to grips with who he is. The sureality of the episodes makes it similar in some way to David Bowman's transformation at the end of 2001: Surreal, and not meant to be taken literaly.

----
But then we have fans who complain, said the last two episodes were on crack, and demanded a proper ending to the seires. Their punishment was End of Evangelion, which witnessed much blood and carnage, killing off of the major characters, the end of the world, and as much violence, depression, and angst there ever could be in addition to the confusion that was still there. I haven't watched EoE for that very reason and I scoff at people who blow off the last two episodes as just being 'stupid.' Obviously thinking isn't their taste, or they're Gundam/New Battlestar galactica fans who are only in it for the gore, violence, and sex and nothing else.

Do you guys screen for spoilers at all!?

Anyway, now that the hand is in the jar, I've heard that Yui's soul is contained in Eva 01, Asuka's mother is in unit 02, and Ritsuko's mother is contained in 00.

This begs the question of weather there were any 'souls' in unit 03 and 04... and what of the MP evas?

-------

Rei doesn't react to Shinji's 'intrusion' because hers is an incomplete soul. Her being was virtually crafted from nothing except DNA from Yui, but her personality did not exist prior to her conception. She seems to have three different personalities from the three cloned bodies she posesses- the third I remember seeming to experience emotions (Interactions with the angel intrusion?)

f

Origionality: Super Dimensional Century Orguss

Best Plot/story/Presentation: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Best Comedy: Tied; Vandread, Nadesico

Best Saga: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross

f

I think you'll find it hard to answer because GFoS isn't available commerically (That I know of) in the U.S. There are even less subtitled versions.

f

Asuka Langly, Evangelion.
All the Eva children actually. That'd be nice....

Or anyone really from the Nirvana.

Just too many to list...

f

It's because Rei's soul is incomplete.

Because she's a clone, the Eva explaination says she has no real soul.. the room of gihrin (limbo, purgatory, the waiting place of souls) is empty, so Rei only has a vacuum to draw on.

The simple explaination is that she has no emotion. No shock, no emberassment, nothing of the sort. She was only concerned with getting Gendo's glasses back, not covering up to prevent Shinji's nose from exploding.

f

There's one thing that interests me;

The last episode of Eva contends with the resolutions of instrumentality. In the last episode, claims of time constraints made us see only Shinji's resolution. I wonder what Asuka's would be like, or that of Rei or misato. What about them reaching thier happeiness?

The story IS about Shinji of course, but with all the spare effort going into the H-Eva games, I'd still like to see what the creators could have done with the resolutions of the other pilots/children.

f

ASk me after she and I spend some time living together ^^;

Offhand, probably Ezra from vandread.

f

If it's Asuka, Ice skating.

If it's Ezra, to the library.

If it's Mimsy (Orguss), probably ice skating. or shopping.

f

If this was Asuka, I'd count my blessing.

If it was Mimsy from Orguss, I'd have to wonder where the Orguss was.

if it was Ezra from vandread, I'd have to jump for joy at being on the nirvana, or worry about where shed be staying in the RL :(

f

Lord save us if they made an Eva live action.

For, and you can asure they'll do this, the'll 'reimagine' it just like they did with the 'New" battlestar Galactica. being a fan of the origional and a hater of the new series, I could conjure up a list of 'Changes' the makers of a possible liveaction Eva could make to turn it into utter crap.

And the stupid thing is, like the new BSG, people would love it for the action, the intense 'realistic characters' (i.e., ones you'd want to see killed off) and the inevitavle rape/violence towards women scnes.

And didn't we mention that they'd make Asuka a man? Yeah. >>*

If implimented right, a liveaction eva could suceed, but the way I see it, such a series is best kept in animation form. There's something about the unbeleiveability of animation that could be taken away when put into LA. I hope it never comes to pass, and if it does, then it must be in the hands of someone capable. Like Gainax. Directly.

After watching the series ending again, It seems to make more sense. It seems I come away with a new interpretation every time I watch it :)

Shinji, in essence of the TV series, has to come to terms with the idea of perception. He hates himself, and his self-loathing is what he projects on everyone else. True, other characters do project anger with him, but it's mostly his fault. The latter half of the instrumentality comes to grips with this.

And I assume with this given knowledge he decides to change, and returns to the world.

Though I have to ask, was Shinji responsible for the new world created in the aftermath of Instrumentality? Is he special for piloting Eva 01? Or was his desires for the future merged with others to create the 'outcome' we see in the movie?

It's also clear that Asuka, Rei, and perhaps to a great extent Misato were greatly involved in the Instrumentality. That WAS asuka talking there, perhaps merged somehow on a mental level. We've seen this when Touji noticed Rei and Shinji talking... perhaps a link between pilots of Evas?

f

The girl-winning poster child prettyboy protagonist.

Yeah, I'd be the introspective villan. Failing this, my enemy would be crafty, unforgiving, and a persuasive type. I'd like to take him down by exploiting some kind of character flaw.

f

An Emaan jumpsuit from Orguss. Those things, for some reason, are awesome. I'd choose green primary, blue secondary.

f

It's this simple, then:

Anime is a medium, not a genre. Just as there's a difference between live action and radio drama, Anime is another form of visual entertainment. It's another means to an end.

Of course, american bias points towards anything drawn as being a children's program, but this is changing.

f

Hey! Another rarity here!

It's hard to find the vandread Magna, as I haven't yet... it includes a lot of differences from the anime. Among them, there is no Magno, and the ship is lead instead by Meia or BC. There appears to be a black counterpart to vandread: Dita, and there are some additional characters. It's said there's a translated version out there somewhere, but I haven't found it.

And Kudos to this particular page- Hibiki's never kissed Dita in the series (IIRC).

Ah, nevermind on the differences. Didn't spot the list at the top :)

f

Comedy, lightheartedness, and familiarity with the Characters. being a FF author (Norsehound, of course), vandread is a nice place, nice setting, and nice characters to interact with... provided you don't go OOC.

For me, I like the comedy and the mecha, but I chose the mecha because I'm just like that (author of vandread: army, for those of you in the know :) ). My only dissapointment is that they switched Vanguard designs on us without any reason.

f

Re-watching the series now... almost to the last episodes.

Frankly I liked the TV series ending over the movie. True, I havent' seen the movie, but I was under the assumptio that Gainax made it in reaction to the fan's childish demands for a 'real' ending. So they killed everyone and ended the world.

I also heard that the movie is supposed to take place between 24 and 25- in which case the end of the world brings Shinji to the instrumentality phase... kinda like Dave bowman dissapearing into the monolith at the end of 2001.

In any case, I'd like to pretend the movie doesn't exist. The series is open ended and I like it that way. Killing everyone off and making it as depressing as it is, with SEELE completing instrumentality, is just dissapointing.

f

I just turned 20 and I still prefer Anime over american television.

Because the Japanese treat animation simply as another form of entertainment (rather than a kiddy show as steriotyped here in the U.S.), they aren't restricted by cultural bounds as to where animation could go. Thus, lower effects budget...

And as a whole, I find anime much more interesting than anything out on the U.S. entertainment industry as a whole. It might have something to do with my frustrations about the vanity of actors, but I feel a stronger connection to anime in a way because it wasn't made to fuel someone's ego.

Anime tells stories, and they tell them well. This isn't always the case, obviously, but I hold more anime in high reguards than I do with anything produced by the U.S. Entertainment industry (TV, Holleywood, etx)

f

I like anime because I find it much more entertaining than anything on American television today.

I.e, Anime has more depth than contemporary U.S. TV programs.

f

Looks Gainax to me. Offhand, I'd say this is Rei and Hikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Or two origional characters that happen to look like them... ("hikari" doesn't have the freckles.")

f

Orguss.

Not Orguss 02, the origional Orguss. 4 modes of transformation, dimensional instability, and I'd be the main character :D
